Miles will not work in the Big XII

As first reported by Ross Dellenger, Les Miles has come to an agreement to become the next head football coach of the Kansas Jayhawks. This is a great hire for the athletic department when you look at it on the surface. The athletic department obviously needed to make a splash. When Miles steps in front of the media and boosters, he can throw that national championship ring on the table, say all the right things, and get people to buy in. But how will he fare when he steps onto the field against the high powered Big 12 offenses?

Miles started his career in the Big 12 at Oklahoma State from 2001 to 2004. He had an overall record of 28-21 and a conference record or 16-16. There were some pretty good teams in the conference at that time but those offenses were no where near what he will see next season.

He is still one of the best defensive coaches in the country but where are the points going to come from? I truly believe that Tony Gibson and Gary Patterson are some of the top defensive minds that don’t get enough credit. This is mainly due to the absurd amount of plays they are on the field for compared to some of the other conference.

The success of the Jayhawks is going to depend heavily on who Miles is able to grab for the offensive coordinator position. Mike Gundy was the OC of those teams in the early 2000’s and we have seen what he has been able to create on that side of the ball since he became the head coach there. So good job Kansas, you got our attention. But the verdict is still out on if this is a good hire.
